Experiencing a successful move is all about timing. Do things correctly, at the right time and with the right company and there’s no reason you wouldn’t experience a stress-free move.
The Alpha Moving and Storage professional staff have created a ‘Countdown Guide to Moving’ which will help you to plan, prepare and make the right decisions. In this first part of our new guide, we’ll take a look at things you should do about four to five weeks prior to your moving date.
Address Changes and Notifications
You’d be amazed how many organizations need to be notified of your coming change of address. It’s recommended to start notifying various organizations about your coming change of address about four to five weeks before your moving date.
- Start with the Post Office. Provide the actual moving date as the day in which your change of address should take place. Taking care of that in advance will save you a lot of headaches later on trying to locate important lost mail.
- Prepare a list of all the local utility service providers and notify all of them about your upcoming relocation, relocation dates and new address.
- Think about all the magazines, clubs and organizations you are a member of and notify them all about your change of address.
- Don’t forget to retrieve all your medical records. Ask your doctors, dentist and so forth for recommendations. It would be very useful to get a list of professional health care providers in your destination city.
- If you have children, let the school know about your coming move at least a month in advance so the teachers could help with preparing your children, emotionally and pedagogically.
Inventorying your Move
About four weeks before your moving date is also a good time to begin working on an exact inventory for your coming move. If you already have a mover, such an inventory list will be helpful in determining your price. If you don’t, an actual inventory will help you compare the various estimates provided you.
