State to state moving is a complex process that involves taking many practical and logistic decisions. There are many service providers that offer state to state moving, some of them highly professional and experienced, while others lack the necessary skills, equipment and facilities.
In order to make the right decisions, it is best that you familiarize yourself with some of the basic terms of state to state moving, how it works and the way it is priced.
How State to State Moves are priced
The majority of the relocation service providers you will be considering will charge you according to the size of your shipment, using weight or space based systems to calculate actual cost.
The weight based system works as following – the truck is weighed in a certified weight station. The weighing takes place before and after the loading of the goods. The calculated difference is the actual weight. The customer receives weight certificates as proof of actual weight and charges are based on a pre-determined rate per pound.
The space based system works as following – the moving service provider determines a pre-agreed upon rate per cubic foot. The goods are loaded onto the truck and then the actual space they take is multiplied by the above mentioned rate per cubic foot.
How State to State Moves are done
State to state moves are normally transported by using 50’ tractor trailers and combining several shipments. This means that unless you have an especially large shipment (trailers can contain about 3500 cubic feet) your goods will be transported along with other shipments going the same route.
The goods will either be shrink wrapped and palletized or sealed in wooden containers so as not to be damaged during transit. The trailer may perform several drop offs before it will reach your point of delivery.
