When moving to a new home in New Jersey then you need to know to find a good local moving company in New Jersey. Moving to a new home is not easy especially if you are moving from a different state. While you might choose to move on your own, hiring a competent moving company is a better option because they can take the load and stress of moving from you so that you can focus on settling into your new home.

While it’s best to work with a local moving company because they are easily accessible, don’t be tempted to go for the cheapest without vetting them thoroughly.

Here are some local Jersey moving tips that will not only help you land the right moving company, but also make the moving experience delightful.

1. Check License and Background

Professional movers in New Jersey must be licensed to operate within the Garden State. They should also have a license that covers your property from loss and damage during the move. If you need moving companies that move across the country, make sure that the moving company of your choice has a unique license number, which is issued by the United States Department of Transportation.

2. Vet the Moving Company’s Reputation

Today most companies have presence online and they get a lot of online reviews. You cannot, however, trust online reviews on their own. Look through the various reviews and testimonials but additionally, check out Better Business Bureau. The Better Business Bureau will confirm if the reviews are accurate and you can also find out if the company has outstanding complaints.

3. Consider the Moving Company’s Experience

The longer the company has had experience in New Jersey, the more experience it has for an honest and professional business. The longer they’ve been in operation, the more prepared they will be to handle your move without mishaps. They have probably made many mistakes in the past and learned from them.

4. Get an All-Inclusive Moving Estimate

When doing your budget for moving, demand that your moving company discloses all costs associated with the move. Make sure the packing costs and cost of material is included too. You might find that it will be cheaper to do the packing yourself. Another oversight is usually fuel which is not always included in the quotation. Making sure that your quotation is comprehensive saves you the stress of unexpected costs later on.

5. Packing and Unpacking

Ordinary local moving companies don’t offer packing and unpacking services. If you need help with packing and unpacking, make sure your preferred movers offer a full service. When getting your estimates, find out if the packing and unpacking charges are separate or if they are included in the larger moving fee. It is also important to find out if the packers are trained and in a position to handle your delicate items.  It’s also good to know if they have the expertise to fix utilities such as connect your cooker, shower, television, and other appliances.

6. Payment Options

Find out what the terms of payment are. If you need to make a deposit and whether payment is accepted in cash, using credit or debit cards. Alpha Moving & Storage has a wide range of payment options that suit everyone.

7. Stay Clear of Companies that Have Switched Names

Some moving companies evade assessment by the Better Business Bureau by conducting business in different names. Make sure your moving company of choice has a local address and that the licensing and insurance information provided is accurate.

When you make a call to their premises, an employee should answer the call while stating the Business’ full name.

If the business is linked to another business or does business using another name get this information including the federal and state numbers associated with those business names. You can also do an online search to see reviews linked to those alias business names. If you have concerns or complaints, contact the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration at 888-368-7238.

8. Do not Sign a Blank Contract

Before signing a contract, make sure it clearly states all the charges and any extra fees. It should also have a comprehensive list of all your belongings. If any of your items are not branded on the inventory form, make sure to sign before the movers leave. If you leave anything unmarked you will not be able to claim it because the inventory list is what is used to determine which items were actually picked and dropped.

9. Stay Clear of Guaranteed Quotes

Three types of moving contracts exist:

  • Non-binding estimate which means that the moving company cannot demand a payment that exceeds 10% of the amount in the original quote. It also demands that all averages be paid within a 30 day time period from delivery.
  • Non-binding to exceed contract. This one ensures that there will be no additional charges over and above the initial estimate.
  • Binding estimate. This contract guarantees a price for the move is catered for including any extra services. Should you ask for additional services that were not in the original estimate, you can pay the extra fee within 30 days.

10. Valuation Protection and Moving Insurance

All moving companies must assume liability for the goods they are transporting. However, liability comes in two levels and each level offers a different kind of protection.

There is full value protection which is the most comprehensive. Should any of your property get damaged or lost in the course of moving, the moving company has no option but to do one of the following:

  • Repair the damaged item until it is fully restored and in the condition, it was originally when obtained from the owner or pay for the cost of repairs.
  • Replace the item with an identical one, or pay for the replacement cost.

The other form of moving protection is known as Released Value and it is the most economical because it does not attract an additional charge. However, the protection it offers is limited. Should any item get lost or damaged during the move, the movers will assume liability for a maximum of 60 cents for every pound of the item. Although you are not charged an additional fee for Released Value, you are required to sign a statement on the contract stating you agree to it. It compensates according to an item’s weight and not its actual value so could lose a lot in the end. If you don’t fill select the Released Value option on the contract, your goods will be moved using the full value protection level, which you shall be charged for.

Alpha Moving helped us move from an apartment with many stairs in Hoboken to a suburban home in NJ. There team was very responsive, professional, punctual, … More and communicative. I was very happy with their service, and they helped make the experience less stressful. The Alpha team was great at communicating ahead of and during our move and they set our expectations on pricing. We were very happy with our decision to hire Alpha.

My experience using Alpha Moving and Storage was excellent. The crew was courteous and professional. They took their time to ensure that everything was … More covered and packaged before the move so there was no damage. They made sure everything was positioned correctly in our house, and even helped to move a few pieces of furniture that were not part of the original move. I would highly recommend

I recently hired Alpha Moving to help a family member move from a 3rd-floor walk-up in Brooklyn to New Jersey, and I couldn't be more impressed with … More their service. The team was punctual, professional, and showed exceptional care for both the Brooklyn apartment and the New Jersey home. They took extra precautions to protect the walls and floors, which we really appreciated. Communication was excellent before, during, and after the move, making the entire process much less stressful. I highly recommend Alpha Moving to both family and clients—they’re reliable, professional, and offer very reasonable pricing..
