It’s no secret that moving can be a difficult experience for children and teenagers. Having to deal with a new environment and a new school, leaving friends behind and the stress of needing to make new friends are all issues that should be addressed by parents.
Here are a few things you could do in order to try and make the process of moving a bit easier on your children.
Make your Children a Part of the Process
Whatever the reasons for the relocation are, try to share them with your children, according to their age and abilities.
If the move doesn’t seem like an arbitrary decision by the parents, but a logical step, coping with it just might get a little easier.
Listen to your Children’s Concerns
Demonstrate empathy for your children’s concerns. Things that may seem trivial or easy to cope with for you as an adult may be extremely difficult for a child or a teenager. It is important that you speak to them and support them. The more you listen, the more they’d be willing to share their feelings, trust you and accept the relocation.
Give your Children Time to Adjust
Be prepared to allow your children a period of several weeks or even several months of adjustment. Be understanding and prepared to accept moodiness and melancholy as a natural reaction.
