In our previous Alpha Moving and Storage blog post, we discussed the subject of finding out more about the reputation of a moving company. One of our recommendations was to select a local company in your immediate area. But how can you make sure you’re actually dealing with a local company? Let’s take a look at a few simple actions that will allow you to check your potential mover’s location.
Double Check the Address
Some companies will provide you a PO box or the address of a self storage facility in the area as their local address. Normally, that’s not really a good sign. You should check the address listed with the various moving regulating authorities. You may also want to actually pay a visit to your local mover’s headquarters.
A large local company should have equipped facilities and a proper storage facility. If the company is trying to avoid allowing from visiting their offices, it should probably turn off your warning bells.
Especially for larger sized moves, it is our strong recommendation to have a local company representative come over, inspect your goods and provide you with a written estimate.
Make Sure you Deal with an Actual Mover and not a Broker
Moving brokers will provide you an estimate and even reserve a move for you and then simply offer it to the highest bidding mover. This basically means that you end up using a company you know absolutely nothing about. Some brokers may provide you with local addresses, so it’s up to you to do some in-depth research and make sure the address you are provided with is that of an actual mover.
