It doesn’t matter if you need to move cross-country or just around the block, moving involves a lot of work and a lot of stress. Understanding more about moving and the way it works will help you, not only in making the right decisions, but also in relieving your stress. This new series of Alpha Moving and Storage articles is intended to provide interested customers with the basics of moving. From contacting movers and checking their reputation to scheduling long distance deliveries, you will find it all here.
Before Calling Your Movers
It is recommended to focus your objectives, prepare inventories, and make decisions regarding your move, even before you start calling moving companies. Searching for relocation services or calling a mover without really knowing whether or not you will need storage or packing services, or what furniture you will be taking with you, probably won’t be that effective.
Making Decisions and Preparing Inventories
Start by preparing an inventory list. Many people make the mistake of giving a list of furniture from memory, such lists will almost always be highly inaccurate. You’d be amazed by how much furniture, boxes and “stuff” you’ll discover around the house.
Take your time, go room-by-room, and prepare a detailed list of all the furniture you have. If you are still unsure about some of the furniture, mark them with an asterisk, it’s better to provide your mover with a slightly inflated list and end up paying less than providing an abbreviated list only to discover you have ten more pieces of furniture on the day of the move.
If you have furniture with glass parts or delicate pieces that will require special handling, be sure to mark them down on your list. This will prove useful when the time comes to discuss the packing aspect of the move with your relocation company.
