For many people, the garage is where everything they don’t quite want to get rid of, but don’t quite want to throw away ends up. Add the usual mixture of tools, lawn mowers, sports equipment and file boxes, and you end up with a daunting packing task. This Alpha Moving and Storage guide will help you with the task of packing your garage with some easy to follow practical advice.
Before you start Packing
Taking a bunch of boxes into the garage and just starting to pack everything is probably a bad idea. You’ll simply end up taking a lot of stuff you don’t need. Especially when long distance moving is concerned, you really don’t want to pay for weight or space for items that will eventually get thrown away.
Getting things in Order
So sorting out and decluttering should come first. You can start by sorting out and throwing away hazardous materials such as gas and oil, pesticides and paints. Many such materials are not allowed on the truck for long distance moving.
If you decide to take cans of paint, paint thinner or other liquid materials, make sure you carefully tape all the lids. Also, contact your moving company to inquire whether or not such items are permitted, again, especially when long distance moving is involved.
Sort out all the building materials, wood, and scrap metal you thought you might end up using one day for your dream projects. If it sat there in the garage for the past ten-fifteen years, it’d probably just end up sitting in the new garage for the next ten. The same rule applies to your, probably vast, collection of nails, screws and bolts. If you haven’t used them in the past few years, it would probably be better to get new ones, if needs be, at the destination, instead of paying for moving them.
