If you decide to do some or all of the packing for your coming more on your own, here are some professional packing tips compiled by the Alpha Moving and Storage Dispatch department.
- Empty out all the drawers. This will make the items less heavy to carry and less prone to any damage.
- Similar items should be packed together. Don’t mix up books and dishes, glassware and cast iron items. Group similar items together and pack them in appropriate boxes.
- Be sure to keep all parts of broken down items together. Prepare and label in advance small plastic containers or bags for screws, hinges etc. Losing such items will make it very difficult, sometimes even impossible to reassemble a broken down item.
- Carefully fasten all electrical cords and make sure they’re not dangling from any of the pieces to be moved.
- Use white paper for the packing or fine china rather than newspapers. When using newspaper for delicate packing, the ink can sometimes rub off onto the china.
- It is highly recommended that the total weight of any box will not exceed approximately 50 pounds.
- When packing your own boxes of delicate items, try to place a thick layer of crushed paper in the bottom in order to create a “cushioning” effect.
- Don’t “overload” your boxes. Pack the items firmly so that the items inside won’t shift while the moving process is taking place. Don’t force the cover closed so the items inside won’t be crushed and damaged.
- List the content of each box on its side. This will help the movers both with the loading of the truck and the offloading at the destination. It will also help the movers place them in their designated destination rooms.
